VWAN Nigeria: supporting intercultural dialogue

Voluntary Workcamps Association of Nigeria (VWAN) is a registered non-profit organisation founded in 1963. Our activities are carried out through the service of youth volunteers towards community building and promoting a culture of peace. The Association is a group of Service Civil International in Nigeria and maintains membership of CCIVS (Coordinating Committee for International Voluntary Service) and NYCN (National Youth Council of Nigeria); we also have corresponding relationship with the partners and stakeholders on local and international platforms.

VWAN strives to inculcate the attributes for active citizenship into minds of people and facilitate inter-cultural learning exchange among youths of diverse nationalities without bias to differences. We organize various exchanges of youths across the globe in the past decades; these exchanges offered the space for co-operation among young people of diverse backgrounds and orientation. Besides the Long term programmes, we also receive short term and middle term exchanges all year round from several partner organisations worldwide, they are placed on our recurrent social projects (orphanages, schools and disabled homes). These projects have demonstrated to be an effective way of helping to break down barriers and prejudices between people of different backgrounds and to promote social inclusion, culture of peace and intercultural understanding.

VWAN has ample experience in coordinating and facilitating the organisation of both international and community projects and exchanges (both long- and short-term), with a focus on community development, peace building, intercultural dialogue and climate change. Part of the voluntary work consists of organizing international seminars, meetings, training courses, Workcamps, study visits, as well as community out-reach programmes in order to strengthen the role of youth in the society, to build capacities volunteers and to contribute to sustainable development.

Besides, in this year VWAN has implemented the following projects, which are all related to intercultural dialogue, peace building and/ or sustainability:

  • Young Citizens Building Global Communities: lead for nature in and with Peace. A 7days training course on Climate Justice and Peace that took place in Lagos-Nigeria. The training started from the idea that volunteers, young people and youth workers play an important role in shaping their future society and creating the changes they need to see in the world and the approach that all this can merely happen in peace, respect and cooperation with nature. The training gathered youth activists from 21 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. The project was co-funded by the Youth in Action programme- sub action 3.2 of the European Commission
  • Youth Build Peace: youths as voluntary actors in Local communities. Educate globally, act locally. A 6days Africa-Europe cooperation seminar focusing on peace building in local communities. Participants engaged were from Nigeria, Togo, Benin, Cameroun, Czech, Germany and Finland. The projects receive d the financial support of the North South Centre of the Council of Europe.
